According to the producer, the 2022 Uncharted film starring Tom Holland may get a sequel. Last year, the live-action adaptation of Naughty Dog’s iconic PlayStation franchise was released to mixed reviews but significant box office success, grossing over $400 million worldwide. While the critical response was mixed, studios pay attention to the bottom line, and the first film made enough money for producers to contemplate a sequel.
The live-action Uncharted film features Tom Holland from Spider-Man as a teenage Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as Victor “Sully” Sullivan. The film’s action set pieces and impressive stunt work were praised, but it was also chastised for having a significantly less engaging story than its video game counterparts, with many calling it a “greatest hits” movie that stitched together plot points and sequences from the gaming franchise.
Uncharted movie producer Charles Roven was questioned by The Hollywood Reporter if there was a desire to extend the film franchise. He replied:
“Oh yeah! We had a really good time with that movie. The fans really liked the movie, and people who didn’t know anything about the game really liked the movie. So we are definitely looking to make another one of those.”
However, there is some truth to the claim that broad audiences seemed to enjoy the film. The reviewer score is 40% on RottenTomatoes, but the audience score is 90% based on over 5,000 verifiable ratings. That may be enough positive feedback for Sony Pictures to decide whether or not to pursue a sequel.
To replicate the popularity of the first Uncharted film, Holland and Wahlberg must reprise their roles as the charismatic duo. Holland has backed away from big-budget projects in recent months, even taking a well-deserved break from being the MCU’s Spider-Man (for the time being), so it’s unclear if he’ll return to play Nathan Drake anytime soon.
