It’s official: Taylor Swift has outdone herself yet again. While the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter is no stranger to creating (and breaking!) records, her 2014 re-release of 1989 (Taylor’s Version) has officially become her most successful album debut to date.

Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) soared to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums list after its Oct. 27 release, marking her 13th album to do so, according to Billboard. The album sold 1.6 million units in the United States — and 3.5 million units globally — in its first week, exceeding her previous record established with the reissue of the original 1989 album in 2014.

Taylor’s latest re-release also has the highest launch of any album in terms of unit sales since Adele’s 25 was published in 2015, according to Billboard, as well as the sixth-largest sales week since Luminate began electronically recording music sales in 1991.

Taylor Swift has just become a billionaire.

“I was born in 1989, reinvented for the first time in 2014, and a part of me was reclaimed in 2023 with the re-release of this album I love so dearly,” Taylor wrote on Instagram shortly after her new album’s release. “Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine the magic you would sprinkle on my life for so long.”

She continued,  “This moment is a reflection of the woods we’ve wandered through and all this love between us still glowing in the darkest dark. I present to you, with gratitude and wild wonder, my version of 1989. It’s been waiting for you. Taylor.”

Swift first announced the release of 1989 (Taylor’s Version) in August, during her final Los Angeles gig of the Eras Tour. Her current release comes months after she debuted Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) in July, which was followed by Fearless and Red (Taylor’s Version) releases in 2021.
