Despite playing the entire game from the beginning, Cristiano Ronaldo did not score. The 38-year-old striker was thus denied the title of top scorer in the Euro 2024 qualifiers as Romelu Lukaku, who scored four goals in Belgium’s match against Azerbaijan, monopolized this position with 14 goals, four more than Ronaldo.
Ronaldo led the team in scoring as usual, finishing with seven goals, four more than the next two players, Joao Felix and Bruno Fernandes combined. Among them, the Saudi Arabian striker missed three opportunities to score the goal. Ronaldo did, however, manage to make an impression by setting up midfielder Ricardo Horta for a goal, making the score 2-0.
Throughout the majority of the match, one team attacked while the other team defended. Portugal, playing at home, dominated early on but lost the chance to go ahead. The worst scenario occurred when midfielder Otavio crossed the ball on the left wing, only for the pass to turn into a shot that struck the inside post.
Bruno Fernandes’s brilliant performance at the end of the first half gave the home team the lead. Bernardo Silva found the Man United midfielder with a pass. Hakon Valdimarsson, the goalie, was unable to reach the ball after he pressed it into the penalty area and fired diagonally, hitting the ground.
The closest to scoring at the start of the second half was Ronaldo. The 38-year-old striker beat the Icelandic defender in a pressure phase after Joao Mario’s cross, but he missed the target that Valdimarsson had selected.
Ronaldo tried to score in the 66th minute, but Valdimarsson was unable to stop Felix’s shot. However, he helped Horta reach the empty net by bringing the ball to his feet.
In the second half extra time, Iceland came close to scoring again. In a face-off, Orri Oskarsson was unable to defeat goalkeeper Diogo Costa. Before the penalty area, the ball bounced out and fell to Arnor Ingvi Traustason. The midfielder did, however, strike a home defender prior to striking the crossbar.
