Tom Brady, at 46, Criticizes Today’s NFL, Citing ‘Lot of Mediocrity’ and Lamenting a Lack of Past Excellence

According to Tom Brady, NFL play isn’t as good as it once was. In an appearance on ESPN’s “The Stephen A. Smith Show” on Monday, the seven-time Super Bowl champion discussed his frustrations with the current product in detail. What you should know is as follows:

The 46-year-old Brady claimed he no longer sees the same level of brilliance as he once did and that there is “a lot of mediocrity in today’s NFL.”

The former quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New England Patriots criticized a wide range of topics, including rule changes that protect players from injuries and coaching practices.

The former quarterback criticized college football player development as well.

What Brady stated: “I believe the coaching has decreased from what it was.” “I don’t believe that young players’ development is as strong as it once was. The schemes aren’t as good as they formerly were, in my opinion. Many negative habits have been incorporated into the game’s actual play via the regulations.

“Therefore, I simply believe that the product is not as good as it has been.”

Brady also mentioned how the rule adjustments to protect offensive players let them to play with more care and freedom.

Brady remarked, “I look at a lot of guys that made an impact on the game, like Ray Lewis, Rodney Harrison, Ronnie Lott, and guys, and every hit they would have made would have been a penalty.” “You hear coaches whining about their own players getting tackled, so why don’t they teach their players self-defense techniques? The foundations of such subjects used to be our constant focus. They are currently constantly attempting to be controlled.

“Offensive players need to protect themselves,” Brady went on. A defensive player cannot defend an offensive player. A defensive player must take self-defense measures. You can basically play carelessly and then get penalized if someone strikes you hard, which I believe is largely due to the way the rules have been implemented.

Given the frequency of coaching changes in college football, Brady also attacked the game’s lack of fundamentals.

Brady remarked, “I really believe that college players were more prepared when I came out than they are now.” “Just because there aren’t even many college programs anymore, and a lot of coaches are switching to different programs.” Numerous collegiate teams exist, but there aren’t any programs that focus on player development.

“Although they may be physically fit, they lack many of the abilities necessary to be a professional when they are brought to the NFL. I basically played at a college program that was really similar to a professional one when I was a player at Michigan. I believe that over the past 12 to 13 years, the game has demonstrated that these different players are not exactly as prepared as they were when they first arrived. I believe that things have somewhat deteriorated.
