For Father’s Day, Dwayne Johnson is remembering his “complicated relationship” with his late father, Rocky.
Johnson, 51, posted a video on Instagram on Monday, expressing his regret for not being able to wish his own father a happy Father’s Day, saying that he felt “there was something I’d missed” in his Sunday Father’s Day post. Johnson then went on to express sympathy for “all the fathers out there like me.”
Johnson stated that the holiday can prove to be “a tricky thing that we have to contend with.” Johnson made his appearance in the video, which he claimed he made while working out, wearing a sweat-soaked hoodie and shorts.
Particularly considering that many men, including myself, experienced a difficult and complex relationship with our fathers. That’s what I had with my old man, and I’m sure many of you did too. It’s challenging because we wish they were here right now, but they’re not,” Johnson remarked, alluding to his own father, a Canadian professional wrestler who passed away in January 2020 at the age of 75.
“Even though it was difficult at times and we argued occasionally, I would like him to be here one more time to tell him how much I appreciate and wish him a happy Father’s Day. But it’s difficult because we don’t have the luxury,” he said in the video.
The Black Adam actor revealed that he and Rocky were not on speaking terms at the time of his ԀеаtҺ, and he went on to encourage fans who have difficult ties with their own fathers to “try and reconcile that stuff, try and bring it back together.”
Dwayne Johnson says that he and Father Rocky “never miss a story.” To stay up to current on the best content PEOPLE has to offer, from fascinating human interest stories to juicy celebrity news, sign up for the free daily newsletter.
“Do your best to reconcile because the alternative is something could happen and all of a sudden you’re writing the eulogy for your dad’s funeral, like I found myself,” Johnson stated. “I had to write and give the eulogy when I woke up one day to find that dad was gone. That’s not what I desire for you folks.”
“All our dads [who are] up in heaven are looking down on us now,” he continued, “if you have an opportunity, if your old man is around and you do have a shot to reconcile it.” I hope they’re pleased with what they observe.”
