A new Karate Kid film starring Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio is scheduled to be released on December 13, 2024.
Both Chan and Macchio, who played Mr. Han in 2010’s The Karate Kid and Daniel LaRusso in the original Karate Kid trilogy and the popular Netflix series Cobra Kai, will return to their respective roles.
The announcement is made through a film that shows a global casting call for Li Fong, the character who will be the new Karate Kid. A Chinese actor between the ages of 15 and 17 who is “smart, scrappy, and a skilled martial artist” and speaks English fluently is needed for the part.
But the plot will take place on the East Coast and “focus on a teen from China who finds strength and direction via martial arts and a tough but wise mentor,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The new film will connect the 2010 reboot, in which Chan portrayed a kung fu master who trains Jaden Smith’s 12-year-old character Dre Parker, into a larger Karate Kid universe. The 2010 reboot was previously marketed as a “return to the original Karate Kid franchise.” Macchio plays Johnny Lawrence in Cobra Kai, costarring with William Zabka as the original Karate Kid. The program was originally scheduled to return for a sixth and final season earlier this year, but the writers’ strike forced a postponement.
