‘Meg 2: The Trench’ Surpasses Box Office Expectations Despite Mixed Reviews

Box office figures updated as of August 6th reveаl that the horror-survival film “Meg 2: The Trench” has performed exceptionally well upon its release, despite generating mixed reviews.

After four days in North American markets since its August 4th debut, director Ben Wheatley’s “Meg 2: The Trench,” starring Jason Statham, has amassed a total of $112 million in international ticket sales, with a global box office gross of $142 million. Although “Meg 2: The Trench” has received criticism, it has managed to achieve promising box office results for a film with a budget of $130 million. As a collaborative project between the United States and China, the film features a star-studded cast, including Jason Statham, Li Bingbing,  and Cliff Curtis.

Similar to its predecessor, the franchise has found substantial support from international markets. The original film, released in 2018, earned a total of $530 million worldwide, with 73% of its box office revenue coming from outside of North America.

Notably, China emerges as the leading contributor to the film’s box office revenue, with a total of $53.3 million. Mexico follows with $7.6 million, and the United Kingdom with $5.1 million.

Despite its impressive box office performance upon its release, “Meg 2: The Trench” has received negаtive reviews, earning a “rоtten” rating of 28% on Rоtten Tomatoes. The film continues the story from the first installment, depicting humanity’s efforts to tame the ancient Megalodon species lurking in the depths of the ocean.

In other box office news, Christopher Nolan’s 12th film, “Oppenheimer,” which delves into the biography of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bоmb, has surpassed the $500 million mark worldwide, garnering critical acclaim. The film stars Cillian Murphy in the role of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Out of the $552 million global box office gross, $324 million comes from international markets.

Additionally, Patrick Wilson’s directorial project, “Insidious: The Red Door,” has become the highest-grossing horror film of 2023 thus far, accumulating $182.5 million worldwide, with $100 million originating from markets outside of North America.
