Mikel Arteta has disclosed his willingness to utilize Declan Rice as an emerge𝚗cy defender for Arsenal. The Gunners’ high-priced signing from West Ham has made a significant impact in the Premier League this season, featuring prominently in midfield and aiding Arsenal in their pursuit of both the Premier League title and success in the Champions League.
Although Arsenal has enjoyed a relatively smooth campaign thus far, Arteta is prepared for any obstacles that may arise as they strive to secure their first Premier League title since 2004. Following the team’s 1-1 draw with PSV in their final Champions League group stage match, Arteta praised Rice and revealed his plans for the 24-year-old moving forward after an experiment during the game.

“We are very short at the back, and I really wаnted to try how we would resolve that situation if something happens,” Arteta explained. “I thought he [Rice] was really good. He has played there before. We have to be prepared for emergencies and ensure that we can fill that gap adequately. He is a good option.”
Rice played for 30 minutes as a center-back for Arsenal against PSV, coming on as a substitute for William Saliba with the group already secured. With injuries beginning to mount in Arsenal’s defensive line, including players like Jurrien Timber, Arteta is exploring alternative options to maintain defensive stability and adapt to unforeseen circumstances.
