German production fund FFF Bayern has invested €2 million in Cliffhanger 2, the follow-up to the 1993 action movie starring Sylvester Stallone. Filming is scheduled to begin in summer 2024 in Europe, with director Jean-François Richet attached.
Stallone plays ranger Gabriel “Gabe” Walker again in the screenplay by Mark Bianculli (The Good Neighbour, White Smoke), which finds him running an elite mountain lodge in the Dolomites.
During an exciting weekend trip, Gabe and a prominent customer are kidnapped; his daughter must use all of her climbing abilities to outwit the kidnappers, setting off a battle for life and death.
German-based fund FFF According to Bayern, Jean-François Richet, whose resume includes action thriller Plane, Mesrine: Killer Instinct, and Assault on Precinct 13, is directing the movie. Previously, Ric Roman Waugh was named as the director.
Cliffhanger 2 is being organised as a German-British co-production between Munich-based Supernix and London-based Black Magic Films in association with the US’s Original Films, according to FFF Bayern. Maze Pictures and Occupant Entertainment have partnered to create Supernix. Rocket Science, based in London, handles sales abroad.
Producers Lars Sylvest and Thorsten Schumacher of Rocket Science, Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe of Original Films, Philipp Kreuzer of Maze, and Joe Neurauter of Occupant are also involved.
The main photography will start in the summer of 2024, with the majority of the shoot taking place in Munich’s downtown and the Penzing Studios in Bavaria.
Furthermore, the sequel will receive the whole €10,000 as part of FFF Bayern’s recently introduced intern incentive programme, which aims to draw in new talent for the sector.
The German visual effects studio Rise FX South in Munich was also given €150,000 by the production fund to work on the visual effects of the latest Amazon spin-off series Varsity (working title), which is set in the world of The Boys.
Prior projects supported by this fund included the sci-fi thriller Morning starring Justin Kurzel, the video game sequel Return To Silent Hill directed by Christophe Gans, the remake of The Crow starring Rupert Sanders, the six-part luxury series Hagen on Constantin Television, and the international animated feature Heidi – Saving The Lynxes by Studio 100 Media.
