The controversy arose when Arsenal took an early lead through Gabriel Magalhaes’ powerful header. Shortly after, Liverpool had a strong penalty appeal turned down by referee Chris Kavanagh. A deflected free-kιck from Trent Alexander-Arnold found its way towards Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard, who appeared to handle the ball while losing his balance. Despite the clear contact, the ball bounced away from Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.

The Reds’ players and the entire Anfield crowd vehemently called for a penalty, but Kavanagh allowed play to continue. After a lengthy VAR review, it was determined that the incident did not meet the criteria of being a clear and obvious handball.

Speaking in the post-match interview, Klopp described the penalty situation as peculiar and expressed his disappointment with the decision. Despite Salah’s stunning equalizer in the first half, Klopp’s frustration was evident, as the missed penalty appeal could have potentially changed the outcome of the match.
