Liverpool Set to Make Five Changes Against Newcastle as Double Departure Looms

Liverpool continued their impressive Premier League form with a 2-0 victory over struggling Burnley on Boxing Day. Diogo Jota made a successful return from ιnjury, scoring a goal after coming on as a substitute for Darwin Nunez. With the win, Liverpool moved two points clear at the top of the table, although they have played one more game than Arsenal. Next up for Liverpool is a home match against out-of-form Newcastle United on New Year’s Day. Jurgen Klopp will likely make some changes to his team for the upcoming fixture.

Goalkeeper Alisson Becker is expected to retain his spot, while Caoimhin Kelleher will likely feature in the League Cup and potentially the FA Cup in early January. Adrian remаins the third-choice goalkeeper. Due to injuries to Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas, Joe Gomez has been filling in as a makeshift left-back, with Luke Chambers providing backup. Trent Alexander-Arnold is the first-choice right-back, with Conor Bradley returning from ιnjury to serve as his understudy.

Ibrahima Konate, who was rested against Burnley, is the favorite to partner with captain Jarell Quansah in central defense. Joel Matip is sidelined for the rest of the season.

The potential return of Alexis Mac Allister could provide Liverpool with more options in midfield, as the Argentine can play as a defensive midfielder or on the left side of the trio. Wataru Endo, who has impressed in the defensive midfield role recently, will be available for one final match before joining up with Japan for the Asia Cup. Ryan Gravenberch started against Burnley but was replaced by Curtis Jones, who will be pushing for a starting role.

Harvey Elliott and Dominik Szoboszlai are competing for a spot on the right side of the midfield three. Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic remain out with injuries, while youngsters James McConnell and Bobby Clark have been included on the Premier League bench in recent weeks.

With Mohamed Salah set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations, the return of Diogo Jota is timely. However, Jota may not be ready to start a match just yet after his month-long absence. Cody Gakpo impressed on the left against Burnley, while Darwin Nunez performed well as the center forward. Luis Diaz, who provided an assist after coming off the bench, is also in contention for a role on the left.

Salah has been a regular on the right flank this season, and with Ben Doak out, Harvey Elliott and Kaide Gordon are the alternatives for that position. Klopp will carefully consider his options and make the necessary adjustments to maintain Liverpool’s strong form in the upcoming match against Newcastle United.
