Liverpool’s victory over Newcastle created a new Premier League record.

Liverpool began 2024 on Monday by defeating Newcastle 4-2 to take a three-point lead in the Premier League title fight.

Even though the Reds won handily, it was never easy; with 16 minutes remaining, Newcastle and Mohamed Salah had tied the score at 1-1 thanks to a goal from Alexander Isak.

By then, Salah had already wasted a penalty kick in the first half, and Darwin Nunez had missed numerous good opportunities out of his eight efforts on goal.

However, following quick goals from Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo, Jurgen Klopp’s team eventually prevailed.

Sven Botman gave Newcastle a counterattack, but Salah converted a disputed penalty awarded by Diogo Jota to seal Liverpool’s victory.

Liverpool’s dominance throughout the match was so great that it set a Premier League record.

They produced the most chances of any team in a Premier League game since Opta began gathering statistics in 2010 with 34 shots in the contest, returning 7.27 anticipated goals.

Following the match, a jubilant Klopp said to BBC Sports, “My team played a fantastic game.” We got off to a really spirited start. Dubravka was seen by all, or we made sure the score wasn’t too obvious.

“Excellent match. Everything about the game was fantastic, except for the goals we gave up.

“Amazing game. Unbelievable atmosphere. In terms of counterpressing, football schools were the target. They must observe that, accept that, and hold onto it. Everything about it was excellent.

“The show has to continue. We currently have three training days out of five or six days. It is going to transform the globe from an innovative perspective.

Salah said to Sky Sports in the meanwhile, “It’s a great result for us.” We managed to gain three points in a very competitive game, and as a result, we are currently leading the standings. We must maintain our composure and win each game.”

In addition, the Egyptian said of the opportunities lost: “The players talked in the locker room. We must maintain our composure. I overlooked the pen. After that performance, I didn’t want to depart with the national team.”
