Arsenal has lodged a complaint with the Premier League’s refereeing body regarding the treatment of their winger Bukayo Saka by opponents. Saka was the third-most fouled player in the league during the 2022-2023 season, having been on the receiving end of 87 fouls. Arsenal believes that opponents are able to foul Saka without facing immediate punishment, and they have raised this issue in discussions with the league’s refereeing body. The club suggests that a yellow card should be issued to offenders after the first strong foul on Saka, rather than waiting for a second infringement.
The concern over Saka’s treatment may be influenced by his ongoing Achilles issue, which he has been dealing with since last season. Additionally, Saka suffered an ιnjury and was forced off the pitch during a match against Lens in October.
In February of the previous year, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta warned Saka that he cannot rely solely on referees to protect him from rough treatment. Arteta emphasized the importance of Saka learning how to handle certain situations, such as when to challenge for the ball, how to use his body effectively, and when to jump. He acknowledged that skilled players like Saka often face rough treatment from opponents but stressed that it is part of their role in the team to overcome these challenges and win games.
Earlier in the season, Arteta faced charges from the Football Association (FA) for his criticism of refereeing following Arsenal’s defeat to Newcastle. However, those charges were dismissed by an independent panel the following month
