Kolo Toure: Breakthroughs, Battles, and Backflips with the Invincibles

Kolo Toure’s journey at Arsenal truly blossomed during the unbeaten season. Arriving as a relatively unknown player from ASEC Mimomas in Ivory Coast, he quickly made his mark in the 2002/03 season, being utilized in various positions. However, it was at the beginning of the 2003/04 campaign that he solidified his place in the heart of the defense and never looked back. Forming a formidable partnership with Sol Campbell, Toure played in nearly every league game that season, showcasing his talent and earning a nomination for the PFA Young Player of the Year award.

Over his seven-year tenure at Arsenal, Toure made 326 appearances before enjoying further success with Manchester City and Celtic, with a brief stint at Liverpool in between. He also represented Ivory Coast 120 times and eventually transitioned into coaching after retiring from playing.

During a recent visit to the Emirates Stadium, we had the opportunity to speak with Kolo Toure about his significant contribution to the Invincible season. He reflected on his initial conversations with the manager, Arsène Wenger, where he expressed his desire to establish himself as a defender. Toure also credited the influential guidance he received from experienced players such as Sol Campbell and Martin Keown, who played vital roles in his development and supported him on and off the pitch.

Toure acknowledged the competitive nature of training sessions at Arsenal, where every player fought fiercely for their positions. He reminisced about the intense dedication and determination of the team, emphasizing that winning was ingrained in their mindset, both in matches and training. The atmosphere during the final game of the unbeaten season against Leicester City was intense, as the team conceded an early goal but ultimately showcased their quality and determination to secure victory.

Looking back, Toure expressed gratitude towards Arsène Wenger and David Dein, who placed their trust in him and provided unwavering support throughout his career. Toure’s perspective and attitude, shaped by his African background, played a significant role in his success. He highlighted the importance of staying humble, being grateful for opportunities, and focusing solely on football rather than external distractions.
