Who loves tie-dye, hemp, and peace? Hippies, of course! The term “hippie” became widespread in the mid-1960s to designate the youth counterculture movement. Hippie culture blossomed in 1967, often known as the Summer of Love. During this time, hundreds of thousands of hippies converged in San Francisco to celebrate hippie music, drugs, anti-war, and free love.

Hippies opposed the Vietnam War and advocated for peace. Hippies chose the peace sign as their movement’s symbol, which was initially conceived by the UK’s Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. This emblem of peace is still widely used today.
