Liverpool is reportedly showing interest in signing Porto’s rising star Alan Varela, who is endorsed by former Wolves captain Ruben Neves.
The 22-year-old midfielder joined Porto from Boca Juniors in August for a fee of €8 million (£6.8 million) and has quickly made a nаme for himself in Sergio Conceicao’s squad. Varela has appeared in 28 games across all competitions this season, delivering impressive performances, including a 1-0 victory over Arsenal in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16.
According to Portuguese outlet O Jogo, Liverpool is contemplating triggering Varela’s €70 million (£60 million) release clause during the summer transfer window. The Reds have already strengthened their midfield ahead of the season with signings such as Alexis MacAllister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, and Wataru Endo.
With Jurgen Klopp set to depart Anfield at the end of the season, Liverpool seems eager to make swift moves in the summer market. Despite being under contract until June 2028, Varela has yet to make his full international debut for Argentina, despite making 111 appearances for Boca Juniors prior to joining Porto.
Varela has garnered praise from former Wolves and Porto star Ruben Neves, who describes him as a “perfect” midfielder. Neves spoke highly of Varela’s aggression, defensive positioning, and recent progress in contributing to the team’s attacking play.
While Manchester City is also said to be monitoring Varela’s progress, journalist Fabrizio Romano suggested that the interest from big clubs, including Manchester City, is part of standard scouting activities rather than advanced negotiations.
Varela’s performances have attracted attention from top clubs, and Liverpool’s potential pursuit of the talented midfielder showcases their ambition in bolstering their squad for the future.
