His form has impressed for the La Liga club, where he has 10 goals in 34 games.

Getafe wants to bring the attacker back on loan for a second time, but he is anticipated to attract attention from other clubs, with the expectation that he will want to play at a higher level next season.

United’s priority is for a permanent deal, but if an acceptable fee is not received, a loan offer will be explored, and reintegration into the first-team group at Old Trafford is not ruled out.

His current contract expires in June 2025, with a one-year extension option available if the club chooses to exercise it.

When The Athletic contacted Manchester United, the club declined to comment.

“He’s a Manchester United footballer so we are in charge of football,” Ratcliffe said. “So the answer is yes, we have to make decisions. It’s quite clear we have to make a decision. There is no decision that’s been made.

“He’s on loan obviously but he’s not the only one. We’ve got one or two footballers that we have to deal with and we have to make a decision on so we will do that.

“The process will be: understand the facts, not the hype and then try and come to a fair decision on the basis of values which is basically is he a good guy or not, and answer could he play sincerely for Manchester United well and would we be comfortable with it and would the fans be comfortable with it.”
