The lead-up to the American Music Awards was marked by tension and discord, particularly due to Taylor Swift’s very public clash with music executive Scooter Braun.
However, on Sunday night, Swift chose to set aside the controversy and focus on her success. It was a significant victory for her, as she surpassed Michael Jackson to become the record-holder for the most American Music Awards won by an individual, with 29 awards compared to his 24. She took home the top honor of Artist of the Year, along with four additional awards, and was also presented with an honorary Artist of the Decade award.
“All that matters to me is the memories I’ve shared with you, the fans, over the years,” Swift, 29, told the audience at the Los Angeles ceremony after performing a medley of her classic hits.
Although many anticipated she would address her ongoing feud with Braun, who owns the master recordings of her first six albums after her switch to a new label in 2018, Swift chose not to mention the dispute during the event. She had recently accused Braun of blocking her from performing her older songs at the awards show, which led to a public argument and Braun’s family receiving threats following Swift’s call to her 122 million Instagram followers to express their feelings about the situation.
Despite the feud, Swift did not reference it during her performance. She did, however, start her show wearing a white shirt emblazoned with the titles of her previous albums. Reflecting on the past year, she described it as being both positive and challenging, though she did not go into specifics.
Swift defeated contenders like Drake, Ariana Grande, Halsey, and Post Malone to win Artist of the Year. Her appearance on the red carpet was striking, pairing a fierce look with a sparkling green dress.
Her achievements over the past decade certainly justified the Artist of the Decade accolade. Her five albums released between 2010 and 2019—Speak Now (2010), Red (2012), 1989 (2014), Reputation (2017), and Lover (2019)—all reached #1 on the Billboard charts. Additionally, she has achieved three #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, completed three global stadium tours, and won two Billboard Woman of the Year awards.
