On August 28, a CIA official informed reporters that a failed terrorist plot targeting tens of thousands of fans was uncovered at a recent Taylor Swift concert in Vienna, Austria. During the annual intelligence summit in Washington, DC, CIA Deputy Director David S. Cohen revealed new details about the thwarted plot that led to the cancellation of all three of Swift’s The Eras Tour concerts in Austria earlier this month, according to The New York Times and NBC News.
At the summit, Cohen did not disclose how the CIA became aware of the plot, though they had alerted other nations about the threat, The Times reported.
Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the plot, including a 19-year-old Austrian who is considered the main suspect. The other two suspects are a 17-year-old Austrian and an 18-year-old Iraqi. Their names have not been released.
In a press conference on August 8, Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, head of Austria’s State Security and Intelligence Agency, stated that the 19-year-old Austrian suspect admitted to planning an “attack” at Swift’s concert “using explosives and a knife,” as reported by NBC News, CNN, and Le Monde.
According to Le Monde, Cohen added that “the aim was to kill as many people as possible at the concert and then commit suicide.” The Times reported that around 200,000 people were expected to attend the three concerts.
Taylor Swift and her team have been working closely with British authorities to ensure her five shows at Wembley Stadium in London go off without incident.
“I would not speak publicly about this if I thought it could incite those who wish to harm my fans attending the show. In situations like this, silence is actually a form of restraint, and waiting for the right moment to address it. My priority was to complete the European tour safely, and I am relieved to say that we have done that,” Taylor Swift said.
