Kim Kardashian has faced renewed criticism for purchasing the famous two-piece outfit Janet Jackson wore in her 1993 “If” music video. Although Kardashian bought the custom-made black crop top and suede pants—complete with lace-up fronts and fringe—for $25,000 back in 2021, she only recently chose to wear the ensemble publicly.
When she announced she would be attending Jackson’s concert in the iconic outfit, reactions on X (formerly known as Twitter) were swift and negative. Many of Jackson’s fans expressed their disapproval, arguing that the outfit, which they felt should be preserved in a museum, was being worn inappropriately.
One critic wrote, “Buying historical pieces just for the thrill of it, UGH!” while others described Kardashian’s choice as “cringe.” Some questioned why Kardashian had acquired so many of Jackson’s outfits, with one person wondering if she would mishandle the garments as she allegedly did with Marilyn Monroe’s dress at the 2021 Met Gala. However, Ripley’s Believe It Or Not!, the owner of Monroe’s dress, confirmed that Kardashian did not damage the garment.
Despite the backlash, some fans defended Kardashian, pointing out that the outfit was part of a special auction celebrating Jackson’s 55th birthday in 2021. Jackson herself had expressed her hope that the outfit would bring Kardashian as much joy as it had brought her.
Kim arrived at Jackson’s concert at the Palm Desert Arena in a party bus with her sister Khloe Kardashian and mother Kris Jenner. Leading up to the show, she teased her followers with clips of her wearing the outfit, showing off her toned midriff and styled look.
In her Stories, Kardashian shared her excitement by posting a video of herself in pointy-toe black heels and another clip hinting at the concert with one of Jackson’s songs. She also shared a note from Jackson, congratulating her on the purchase and expressing her pleasure at the outfit finding a new home.
In her Instagram post, Kardashian had previously shared her excitement about winning the outfit, saying, “For @janetjackson’s birthday, because I’m such a fan, I can’t believe I won this outfit on @jules_auctions.”
