A sprawling mega-mansion in Broadbeach Waters, famously featured in the 2015 action film San Andreas starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, is now on the market. The property, known as Te Moana, is being offered through an expressions of interest campaign managed by Rebecca Moffrey of Ray White Burleigh Group.
The mansion, located at 249-255 Monaco Street, last changed hands in August 2020 for $12.5 million. While no specific price guide has been provided, it is expected to fetch a considerable sum, especially given its notable Hollywood connection. This estate bears resemblance to another prominent riverfront property that was recently sold for a staggering $24 million. Both homes, built in the 1990s on prestigious waterfront lots with 42 meters of river frontage, were hailed as some of Australia’s finest residences of their time and served as local bases for Johnson’s blockbuster film.
“Te Moana is undoubtedly one of the Gold Coast’s most extravagant homes, enriched with Hollywood history,” Ms. Moffrey remarked. The mansion’s role in San Andreas—where it appeared in various scenes featuring The Rock—adds a unique allure to the property.
Set amid lush tropical gardens, the two-story residence boasts five bedrooms, six bathrooms, a large al fresco entertaining area with an outdoor kitchen, a 17-meter swimming pool, a pontoon, a jetty, and a six-car garage. Ms. Moffrey describes it as “the Taj Mahal of its day,” highlighting its Mediterranean-style architecture and luxurious features.
The mansion has served as a private retreat for Malcolm Watkins, founder of Australian Finance Group, and his partner, interior designer Peter Kerr. After selling their newly built Toorak home for $25 million in November 2020, the couple relocated north, drawn by the property’s resort-like charm. They are now looking to downsize while splitting their time between the Gold Coast and Airlie Beach.
